e-Invoice for your tax reliefs: collect them, claim more.

Starting with Year of Assessment 2026, there is one small habit worth building: ask for an e-invoice on anything you plan to claim as a tax relief. You request it by giving the seller your TIN or IC number. The payoff comes next year, because LHDN can then pre-fill those reliefs into your e-Filing, so you claim more of what you are owed and hunt through far fewer receipts. It is encouraged, not compulsory, and it costs you nothing at the counter.

What changed in 2026

Two things happened in 2026, and they fit together. In May, LHDN encouraged individual taxpayers to start requesting e-invoices for any expense they plan to claim as a personal relief, a pilot for the 2026 assessment year (the income you declare in 2027). Then in June, LHDN went further and confirmed it will use that e-invoice data to pre-fill your relief information inside e-Filing.

In plain terms: buy a laptop, have it recorded under the lifestyle relief category in the e-invoice system, and that purchase can show up automatically in your e-Filing form later. As LHDN put it, taxpayers will no longer need to dig for receipts during e-Filing, because the records can be pulled from the MyInvois Portal. It is being rolled in gradually, with a transition period running to the end of 2027, so treat the pre-fill as a growing convenience rather than something to lean on entirely just yet.

Which purchases to ask for an e-invoice

Ask for an e-invoice on anything you would normally claim as a personal relief. The common categories:

  • Lifestyle and tech: a computer, smartphone, tablet, books, and home internet.
  • Sports and fitness: sports equipment, a gym membership, and coaching or facility fees.
  • Medical and healthcare: a full medical check-up, serious disease treatment, dental and fertility treatment, approved vaccinations, and your parents' medical costs.
  • Education and childcare: registered childcare or kindergarten fees, tertiary education fees, and approved upskilling courses.
  • Insurance, savings and retirement: life and medical insurance or takaful, PRS contributions, and SSPN deposits.
  • Green tech and local travel: EV charging equipment and entrance fees for local tourism.

The simple rule: if you think you will claim it, ask for the e-invoice. Not sure whether something qualifies at all? Our tax relief checklist lists every relief with its exact cap.

How to ask for an e-invoice

It takes about ten seconds at the counter or checkout. When you pay, give the seller your Tax Identification Number (TIN) or your IC number, and ask them to issue an e-invoice to you as the buyer. The seller submits it, and once validated it appears in your MyInvois Portal. That is the whole move: give your TIN or IC, ask for the e-invoice, done.

This is a different thing from whether you need to issue e-invoices for your own income. Most individuals and small sellers under the turnover threshold do not; if that is your question, read do freelancers need e-Invoice? instead. Here we are only talking about e-invoices you receive as a buyer, to back your reliefs.

How the pre-fill works

Every claimable purchase you make during the year quietly builds your relief list for you. When filing season comes, LHDN can pull those validated e-invoices from MyInvois and drop the amounts straight into the matching relief lines in e-Filing. Instead of a shoebox of fading receipts and a guess, you get a list that is already filled in. That means fewer forgotten reliefs, less time on paperwork, and cleaner proof if LHDN ever asks, because a validated e-invoice is a proper record, not a thermal receipt that has gone blank.

Two ways to claim your reliefs

The old way

A shoebox of receipts

  • Hunt for receipts at filing time
  • Guess amounts, forget a relief or two
  • Thermal receipts fade to blank
  • Type every figure in yourself

With e-invoices

Pre-filled for you

  • Ask once, at the counter, with your TIN or IC
  • Reliefs build up in MyInvois all year
  • A validated record that does not fade
  • LHDN pre-fills the amounts into e-Filing
Same reliefs, far less work: ask for the e-invoice now, let the pre-fill do the typing later.

What it's worth · reliefs you might otherwise lose

Lifestyle (laptop, phone, books, internet)RM 2,500.00
PRS / deferred annuityRM 3,000.00
Full medical check-up (within the medical cap)RM 1,000.00
Reliefs backed by e-invoicesRM 6,500.00
Tax saved, if these sit in the 19% bandRM 1,235.00

Those are three reliefs a normal person genuinely spends on: a laptop, some retirement saving, a yearly check-up. Backed by e-invoices, they are almost impossible to forget at filing time. If your top ringgit sits in the 19% band, that RM 6,500 of reliefs is about RM 1,235 less tax. The exact figure depends on your income band, and each relief has its own yearly cap, so confirm your numbers in the calculator before you file. The point stands: the reliefs you forget are the ones that cost you, and an e-invoice is how you stop forgetting.

What you still have to do

The pre-fill is a helper, not a free pass. Two things stay your responsibility. First, you still decide what is actually claimable. A pre-filled figure is not an approved claim. If a purchase does not qualify, or you are over the cap for that category, do not claim it just because it appeared. You are accountable for the return you sign. Second, keep your own records. LHDN still expects supporting documents to be kept for seven years, and the MyInvois Portal only holds validated records for about two years, so do not treat it as your only copy.

What to do next

Start the habit this year. Give your TIN or IC and ask for an e-invoice whenever you buy something you will claim. Keep your own copy of anything important, for seven years. And when you file, check your exact reliefs and caps rather than trusting the pre-fill blindly. A reader who does those three things claims more, worries less, and keeps clean proof.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to request e-invoices for my reliefs?

No. For individuals it is encouraged, not compulsory. But collecting e-invoices through the year makes your filing faster and your claims stronger, so there is little reason not to.

Boleh ke I still claim if the shop cannot issue an e-invoice?

Yes. A normal receipt or tax invoice is still valid proof for a relief. The e-invoice just makes it easier and lets LHDN pre-fill the amount for you. Keep whatever proof you get.

Does asking for an e-invoice make me pay more tax?

No, the opposite. Reliefs reduce your tax, and an e-invoice is proof of a relief. It helps you claim more of what you are entitled to, not less.

If a relief is pre-filled, is my claim automatically approved?

No. A pre-filled figure is a convenience, not an approval. You still decide whether the purchase qualifies and whether you are within the cap, and you are responsible for the return you submit.

What do I give the seller to get an e-invoice?

Your Tax Identification Number (TIN) or your IC number, and ask them to issue the e-invoice to you as the buyer. It then appears in your MyInvois Portal once validated.
